Hello all,
A couple of weeks ago I sat with the one and only Jessica Mutch McKay. This interview meant a lot to me as she was one of the inspiring people that made me start writing my blog. I think her along with the other political journalists became apart of our lives with the daily 1 pm updates. Being able to sit with her was so cool, I was super lucky to be able to do my interview with her where they record inside parliament, where the political journalists talk about the weeks of parliament and the stories they covered, here is the link if you wanted to listen, I really enjoy listening to it in my spare time. - https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/inside-parliament
At the start of the interview, I got Jessica to tell me 3 things not many people knew about her. These being she can't swim and if she does she can’t swim in a straight line as she broke her arm when she was 4 so she swims in small circles, she loves shoes, and she was in the debating team at her school. Jessica moved to Wellington in 2005 so she’s lived in Wellington for a long time.
The reason why she became a journalist, She chose the path of journalism as it was everything she loved. Like she loves writing, and she loves reading and researching. She got her diploma in speech and drama at Trinity College in London. She loved doing speeches, she said tv journalism really was everything she loved.
She got her Bachelor of Communications and majored in journalism. In her 4th year she did her post-grad and public relations, she said that it really helps in Parliament. She got into politics quite early, she got her first job for prime (Now known as Sky) and it was bassed in the press gallery. In this job, she did a bit of everything and fell in love with politics then.
She became a political editor 3 years ago, being a political editor she manages her team and looks after them all. Her highlights of covering the election campaign were election night. She said that it's always fun covering the election night. She also really enjoyed doing the debates as she had never done it before.
Her advice for young people that want to go down the same carrier path (becoming a political journalist) would be getting some work experience, talking to people involved, asking lots of questions and watch a lot of news. To finish the interview off I asked her if she could choose a ministerial role what would it be. She said she really enjoys foreign affairs so that would have to be it.
Well, I hope you enjoy reading about One News Jessica Mutch McKay! I hope you have a lovely rest of your weekend. My next blog post will be my interview with the one and only Chlöe Swarbrick.
Bye
